Dave is a licensed English teacher with nearly 30 years of teaching and tutoring experience. Dave’s teaching career began at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School where he taught sixth, seventh, and eighth grade language arts for 9 years. While at the middle school, Dave taught district workshops in classroom management and cooperative learning to both new and experienced teachers. In 2006, Dave started his own private tutoring business and has remained a full-time tutor since then. In 2014, Dave partnered with 5 other dedicated educators to create Hilltop Tutoring Center where he continues to help students of all ability levels find success. 

Dave has over 20 years of SAT & ACT test prep experience and has developed many of the verbal test prep lessons in Hilltop’s ACT & SAT course binders. Dave specializes in college essay and college application assistance. His students have been accepted by every top school in the country including Yale, Princeton, Brown, Penn, and Stanford. Dave’s combination of content-area knowledge and a relaxed, amiable demeanor allows him to connect with students personally and help them reach their goals. When Dave is not tutoring, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters and cheering on his beloved New York Mets.

Brian Miller

Brian is a licensed mathematics teacher with a master’s degree in computer science and doctorate (ABD) in mathematics education. He has a combined 27 years experience teaching advanced high school mathematics and computer science, and masters level mathematics courses at Montclair State University.  As a tutor, Brian has worked for nearly three decades creating test prep materials and helping students achieve their AP, SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject test goals.  In addition to tutoring students living in the Summit region, Brian has been very effective at using Virtual Tutoring to provide mathematics, statistics, and computer science assistance to college and private boarding school students.   Brian’s advanced content-area expertise, years of experience, and passion for all things “nerdish” make him highly effective at inspiring his students and encouraging them to reach their peak.

Garrett Nieddu

Garrett is a PhD student studying Environmental Management at Montclair State University where he works with faculty researchers in stochastic population dynamics and mathematical epidemiology. Garrett earned a bachelor’s degree from Montclair State in Mathematics and Physics, as well as a master’s degree in Mathematics. Garrett has a love for math and science, and enjoys sharing his enthusiasm. Tutoring has been a part of his education since he was an undergrad, first as a peer tutor, and then as a tutor in the MSU Mathematics Learning Center. Garrett spends his summers as the Physics lab instructor at MSU, as well as an Algebra instructor and math tutor.

Francesca Pellegrino

Francesca founded Hilltop with her colleagues in 2014. She holds a NJ Principal’s and Supervisor’s license, a teaching certificate in Math Secondary Education, a master’s degree in Pure and Applied Math, and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. After tutoring throughout college, Francesca began working as a Director of Operations at a Sylvan Learning Center and continued there as an advanced math and SAT tutor. While in graduate school, Francesca participated in a GK-12 Fellowship, funded by the National Science Foundation, and was an adjunct professor at Montclair State University. She taught Calculus AB, Pre-Calculus and Geometry at Villa Walsh Academy in Morristown, NJ for five years before switching to Hilltop full time. With decades of tutoring experience, Francesca strives to mentor her students and create independent learners. She believes that a solid foundation in math fact fluency, patience, and hard work is all one needs to succeed in math.

Matt has a deep passion for both mathematics and teaching. He attended Purdue University from 2007–2010, studying Mathematics and Education, and has always been the go-to person among his peers for help with challenging concepts. This natural talent for explaining difficult ideas led him to tutoring early on, and he has now been providing dedicated, one-on-one math tutoring in Summit for over 15 years.

In 2020, Matt and his wife moved to a peaceful farm, where they embraced a more rural lifestyle. Despite the change in location, Matt has maintained the same high-quality, personalized tutoring experience—now conveniently delivered virtually. Ryan is a licensed French teacher with over 17 years of teaching and tutoring experience. He has French-Canadian family heritage and spent a year abroad in Liège, Belgium. He has a Bachelor of Arts in French from Rutgers University and a Master of Arts in Education from Saint Peter’s University. He spent his first 13 years as a teacher working in private education and for the past four years has been teaching at Westfield High School in NJ. He has taught all levels of French, including AP, Ryan’s approachable demeanor allows him to engage with his students in an uplifting and productive atmosphere. James Mizvesky

James is a Ph.D. candidate at Seton Hall University (May 2026) which he began to pursue after obtaining a M.S. in Chemistry and B.S. in Biology at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Florham Campus. James is the lead researcher in the Snow Research Group at SHU working on various projects in separation science with a focus in limits of detection theory, green analytical chemistry, fundamentals of gas chromatography. At FDU his research in the Elshaer Research Group focused on complex NMR studies, and the synthesis of composite materials. He began tutoring at FDU’s Academic Support Center helping his underclassmen and peers in both lower and upper level science courses. He serves as the Chemistry Laboratory Supervisor and Instrumentation Manager at FDU, Florham Campus.

He first started tutoring mathematics while attending NJIT for his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering minoring in Applied Mathematics from the recommendation of his differential equations professor. He found further inspiration to expand his tutoring repertoire with physics while he pursued graduate studies returning to NJIT for a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Having started his career as a computer programmer, he went on to focus on the field of business intelligence, first with Barnes & Noble’s online unit and then at SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Since retiring he has been working as a volunteer middle school math tutor with the PEP program in Summit, and tutors the R programming language through the Varsity Tutors online platform. Matthew Schiff

Matthew has been a classroom teacher for 5 years and a tutor for 8 years. He began his tutoring journey as an undergraduate at University of Delaware’s Office of Academic Enrichment, tutoring college-level Calculus and Discrete Mathematics. During this time, Matthew also worked as an online math tutor, helping hundreds of students from all over the country and accumulating over 1000 hours of service tutoring math subjects ranging from Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education, Matthew stayed in Delaware and served as a high school math teacher. Since October 2007, Jon has spent over ten thousand hours tutoring high school students privately and at learning centers, both in group and individual settings. Earlier that year, he completed his B.S. in Applied Physics from Rutgers University, graduating with highest honors.

While Jon believes that there is value in learning testing strategies and does teach them to his students, he is a firm believer that the best strategy for doing well on a math test is knowing how to do the math.  His goal as a test prep tutor is for his students to not only improve their standardized test scores, but to leave tutoring as more complete and proficient math students overall.
